Mya on the set of Movin On

I love watching old R&B videos, especially after work on a hard day with a nice glass of wine to enjoy myself. One Video that takes me to a place is Mya’s 1998 mega hit, “Movin On”, feat. Silkk The Shocker. When this video dropped, I was 9 years old. The beat and lyrics hit my soul then and there. The video starts off with Silkk The Shocker showing up late to school. While he is in class, he passes a love note that read, “ If Malik is your man, he wasn’t last night”. It was sad to watch a young Mya get cheated on and on July 14, 1998; Mya dropped a song that defines her career with the voice she sings with the swagger she presents in the song. I would watch MTV before Bible School Summer Vacation and I would sit their and watch this beauty perform her heart out. The debut of her video is the soundtrack to every child growing up in the 90’s especially when Mya presents that Street Swagger Class that introduce the world to her.

Mya mega hit “Movin On” dominated the Billboard charts in 1998

The summer of 1998 had me sprung over this DMV native. She is one heck of a performer and on 1:42, “ She begins to dance in the lunchroom where she is moonwalking in a pair of Sketchers”, (Mya, 2009). I don’t know if it was the smile, the fro, or the shoes but she won my heart after busting out those dance moves. Note that style and fashion back then was different and her grooving in her denim overalls should be recognized. With Mya’s witty delivery on the song, you would think this is a diss track toward the man who was cheating on her. At 2:21. she gracefully sings “You ain’t got no money”, (Mya, 2009), that sounded like a direct jab at her opps. Although that is a basic way of saying you broke, it was direct and the way she sang it had no remorse into what she is saying. Freshly graduated at the time, she shows off her cheerleading skills at 2:44 in which proves that she has the stamina and energy to perform. Silkk The Shocker never got the respect he deserved and for those who doubt him (Silkk), he got clear skill in providing for a timeless groovy track. The music video is like a story to me and at an adolescent age, I felt that she was my girlfriend after Malik cheated on her. (When I was 9, I wanted to beat up Malik for doing her wrong). After Silkk The Shocker spits his gem, University High wins the game and Mya walks of the floor. This music video was Malik took a loss by doing Mya dirty so in this case, she is moving on as she hops into a convertabel. If Mya never dropped this masterpiece, I would of never noticed how artistic she is. At. 4:57. “She rolls her eyes at the haters”, (Mya, 2009). That is a Gif that is used to someone who disappoints or upsets. Trust me, I used that in text messages and social media responding to people. How I call it, Mya Movin On is a golden era R&B track that teaches those who deal with heartbreak or not even in relationships. Don’t matter the situation, Mya Movin On is the best song to move on to.
